Established in 1908, the Plaza started as the Bijou on the north side of the Lamar Square. After a fire in 1909 destroyed most of the Square’s north side, including the Bijou, it was quickly relocated to the SW corner of the Square. In 1918, they moved again, this time to the NE corner of the Square, and finally, in 1928, after the Bijou was sold, the name was changed to the Plaza. In 1934, they moved for the last time to a new, state-of-the art building on the south side of the Square.
Since 1934, the Plaza has had many successful years and is a staple on the Lamar Downtown Square, providing entertainment to many families. However, a fire in 1985 next to the Plaza resulted in significant smoke damage to the theater. It eventually closed on April 3, 1986. The last
movie played was Iron Eagle.
In 1993, a group of concerned individuals rallied to save the Plaza Theater. After five years of generous donations, fundraisers, and countless hours of volunteer work, the newly remodeled Plaza Theater opened on November 5, 1998. The next milestone came in 2013 when the Plaza was converted to digital.
